Buckingham County Courthouse
Buckingham County, VA

Description

The Buckingham County Courthouse, originally designed by Thomas Jefferson, was rebuilt in 1869 after the original structure was destroyed by fire. Buckingham desired to combine all court functions as well as Commonwealth's Attorney, Sheriff's Office, and Magistrate under one roof at the existing courthouse site. In a study of long-term caseload and space projections, it was discovered that all court functions required increased capacity.

In response, BCWH Architects designed an addition to the existing courthouse. The existing courtroom remains to be used for ceremonial assemblies, and was complemented by new courtrooms in the new addition for the Circuit Court and General District Court. A new hearing room was provided for the Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court.  BCWH worked with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources to guarantee the addition was sensitively and appropriately designed.  The addition is most successful in it's harmonious relationship with the original Courthouse.  The enhanced Courts facility will stand as a stoic symbol for one of Virginia's most beautiful, pastoral Counties for many years to come.

Petersburg Courthouse
Petersburg, VA

Description

A restrictive, sloping site on the City's historic "Courthouse Hill" was chosen for the new 18,900 square foot structure to house a new circuit courtroom (to supplement the existing courtroom in the historic Hustings Courthouse), a new circuit court clerk's office, and a magistrate's office. Due to the site's topography, a three-story building was nestled into the hillside, satisfying the owner's desire to have separate public entrances on each floor for the court personnel, public and in-custody defendants.   The adjacency to the Hustings Courthouse required a design respectful of the historic context yet still distinguishable as a "court building". The building's massing was developed to more closely resemble other, smaller adjacent buildings, thereby not competing with Hustings Courthouse. Building materials were selected to make reference to historical details of the area. Hand-molded brick was chosen for the exterior, along with a cast stone that references the old courthouse's granite foundation. Trim colors were matched to the surrounding buildings.

Rockbridge County Courthouse
Lexington, Virginia

Description

Subsequent to the Owner's decision to relocate the courthouse from its historic site, BCWH was hired to design the Courthouse at its new location, an adjoining site in downtown Lexington. The Rockbridge County Courthouse Project consisted of a new building and parking deck structure constructed on the corner of Nelson Street and Randolph Street in downtown Lexington, Virginia. This project combined all three courts, clerks, and associated court functions in one facility. The project also included a 145-space parking deck, including secure parking area for court staff and judges that is directly adjacent to the building.

Rockbridge County Courthouse was awarded the 2009 Interior Design Excellence Award (IDEA) and the 2009 Better Models Development Award from the Valley Conservation Council.

Virginia State Capital
Richmond, VA

Description

BCWH Architects served as associated architect with Hillier Architecture to complete renovations and an underground addition to the Capitol. This building, designed by Thomas Jefferson, still serves as the center of Legislative activities for the Commonwealth. As the local architect, BCWH Architects, worked closely with the House of Delegates, Senate, and Governor's aides to establish the programming requirements and space planning for all office areas and support spaces within the historic Capitol building and the new underground extension. BCWH produced the furniture specifications, managed the bidding process, and assisted in the coordination of the furniture installation. The resulting design is a classic interior that is respectful of the historic architecture yet supports modern office functions.  BCWH also coordinated an extensive restoration effort for the historic furnishings and dais in both the House and Senate Chambers. That process included working with a local wood conservator and a technology consultant to ensure that the integrity and beauty of the furniture was maintained while accommodating a state of the art voting system.
