New Fluvanna High School Fluvanna, Virginia The new Fluvanna High School campus will accommodate the growing student population and community by providing space for 1500 students on opening day in 2012, with the ability to expand to accommodate 1750 students in the short term and 2500 in the long term. Expansion will be achieved through both the physical environment and emerging uses of technology in teaching and learning.
This project will use the natural resources of its site to help make the building as efficient as possible and the building will be oriented to lower heat gains and to provide natural light. Fluvanna HS will be a LEED candidate.
This replacement high school was designed to be a focal point of the community serving students and county residents, and is the result of many years of planning for both facilities and curriculum.
Harvie Elementary School Henrico County, Virginia Harvie Elementary School, designed for 750 students, can be expanded to 950. It represents an entirely new school design tailored specifically for its site and its community. The school is a one-story design with four distinct interconnected wings. All of the classrooms are located in three wings forming a continuous loop. This loop encloses a generous courtyard of both hardscape and landscape areas and is intended to be used as an outdoor classroom. Harvie Elementary is designed for multiple opportunities to experience learning. A combination of color patterns and interior materials throughout the school reinforces the goal of making Harvie Elementary a place of active learning for growing minds.
At the center of the outdoor courtyard is a paved compass-rose pointing to true north using inscribed lettering. When used with a shadow casting pole or gnomon, it acts like a sun dial. Students can track the sun's movement through time in relation to our position on the Earth.
Albemarle High School - Renovations & Additions Albemarle, VA For more than five decades, Albemarle High School has held a prominent position as a center of teaching and learning for the community, evolving through renovations and additions which reflected educational trends of the time. In August 2009, the latest series of additions and renovations carefully weave new spaces into the existing building fabric for 21st century teaching and learning. As part of the new design, the project added new classrooms and science labs, professional learning spaces, administration spaces, a refurbished auditorium, multipurpose space, locker rooms, and an outdoor dining plaza for students. As part of the academic additions, a new Math Engineering and Science Academy (MESA) program has been launched, in which students participate in math and science core classes in a modified curriculum that focuses on practical applications, collaboration and experimentation. To offer students lessons in the engineering and science that surrounds them in these new spaces, the building reveals itself with exposed structural systems and mechanical and electrical devices. Signage is provided which describes the various parts and systems of the addition; tying the building to specific curriculum used in the course of study.
Flat Rock Elementary School Powhatan, Virginia The 2-story design of the new 900-student Flat Rock Elementary School helps reduce impact on a resource rich, limited site. The building exterior incorporates materials and finishes consistent with those used at the adjacent High School designed by BCWH in 2003. The New Flat Rock Elementary School design serves students enrolled in Pre-Kindergarten through fourth grade. The building provides approximately 96,000 gross square feet of academic and support spaces.
The building design is composed of public and private sides divided by a central corridor and instructional areas are arranged by grade levels with each wing owning a collaborative group area nearby. These 'clusters' promote collaboration, provide for security, and accessibility and allow children to move independently in accessing the many available resources. There is an abundance of natural light within Flat Rock Elementary and many views and connections to the outside. The trellis in front of the Pre-K area reduces glare inside the classroom and creates diffused light while scaling the building exterior to the community's youngest children. Trevvett Elementary School - Renovations & Additions Henrico County, VA Trevvett Elementary School is a 500-student neighborhood school in Henrico County, originally constructed in the 1950s. The complete renovation of the existing 55,000 square foot facility included all new finishes, but also provided an opportunity to re-orient the school entrance to the bus drop-off area and cost-efficiently capture much needed existing interior space for a new administrative area and media center. New electrical, communications, and air conditioning systems enhance classroom comfort, the school's appearance, and bring Trevvett into 21st century instructional technology and networking capabilities. Accessibility modifications and life safety updates provide handicapped accessible bathrooms and workspaces and bring much of the building into conformance with contemporary codes. Hanover High School Hanover, Virginia The new Hanover High School serves not only as a center for academics and unique career opportunities for the students, but as a center for the community as well. The "public" side of the new Hanover High School features a 950 seat auditorium. A state of the art regional athletic facility seats 3,000 spectators for large events such as basketball, wrestling, and volleyball and has three competition size basketball courts. Other amenities include a fitness room for the community and community meeting spaces throughout the building as well as access to college courses after hours.
A sophisticated color palette, maple paneling, and a metallic ceiling add warmth and richness to an environment focused on learning. The design team vigorously pursued the use of natural light throughout the building. The main street through the building serves as the connection between academic and public side of the building. Meadowbrook High School - Renovations & Additions Chesterfield, VA Revitalization of Meadowbrook High School included renovation of classrooms, including updated science labs, introduction of flexible learning spaces to facilitate both traditional and interdisciplinary organizational approaches, and performing arts and vocational area upgrades. Renovations also included integration of a full school technology network, large group instruction and community areas, as well as conference spaces to accommodate an International Baccalaureate program.
Internal building circulation and planning was improved by expansion and reconfiguration of administrative and guidance areas, in addition to expanded corridors, relocating lockers out of main hallways, and better supervision through direct routing of students. The site work to Meadowbrook High School included landscaping, ball fields, additional sidewalks, circulation improvements, and separation of bus and car traffic.
Powhatan High School Powhatan County, VA Replacing the Powhatan's old high school offered the opportunity to enhance and enrich successful academic programs that bring value to the community, provide for emerging and developing programs and technologies and provide a true 'community center', reflected of their values, where people gather, meet, exercise, eat, surf the net, enjoy cultural events, and learn. The house layout allows for configuration by grade level, interdisciplinary instruction, or departmentalized instruction.
The new Powhatan High School provides virtually a 24/7 amenity to the public. After hours the interior of the building becomes alive with many activities — most occurring right in the large public spaces and corridors: students use the Commons for band ensemble; the cross-country team runs throughout the corridors, the dance team is practicing in the 'Main Street' along with the cheerleaders; in the auditorium, drama club is practicing; the gymnasium hosts an 'open gym' session; teachers are training in the computer lab; and meetings are held throughout the building.
Maggie L. Walker Govenor's School - Renovations & Additions Richmond, VA This 1930's style, double loaded corridor traditional high school was renovated to create a functional, flexible environment for the twenty first century high school with innovative programs. Ni River Middle School Spotsylvania County, VA Ni River Middle School is designed for 900 students, grades six through eight. The entrance atrium lobby is a welcoming space with the administration and guidance suite, the media center, and the forum adjacent to the lobby.
The two-story school is designed with educational "pods" housing each grade level and exploratory classrooms. Each grade level pod contains classrooms and science rooms arranged to accommodate team teaching. A teacher workroom, resource room, special education classrooms, and storage area are additional pod components. The exploratory pod includes art, teen living, two computer labs, technology/vocational lab, and special education classrooms. Health and physical education create one wing of the building, with cafetorium and music classrooms in another wing.
The site is shared with a new elementary school and includes play fields, ball diamonds, and a running track. Bus and vehicular traffic enter at separate locations.
