VSBA 2016 Recap

This year, the 2016 Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) Annual Convention in Williamsburg, VA kicked off with the announcement of the State Awards from VSBA’s Exhibition of School Architecture, which included projects submitted by 8 architecture firms in the areas of new construction, renovation and the adaptive use of existing space (VSBA News Release). BCWH was awarded the Platinum Design Award for the Fit for Life Center addition to Henley Middle School in Albemarle County completed in the 2015-2016 school year.

The BCWH Design team along with ACPS administrators, school administration and PE teachers wanted to stretch beyond a traditional auxiliary gym and felt Henley should incorporate technology and other academic studies with Physical Education. Thus, the Fit for Life Center is an interdisciplinary space that is used by all academic programs and the community. The facility was transformed into a collection of smaller, more specialized spaces including the Multipurpose room, the Fitness Room, the Break-out Space and an outdoor learning courtyard. The Fit for Life Center continues to open new opportunities for discovery and integrated learning. In the video below, Erin Richardson, CID discusses the project along with Jeff Toms, Head P.E. Teacher at Henley Middle School.
