University of Richmond E. Claiborne Robins Stadium - BCWH Architects

BCWH wins Virginia AIA Merit Award for Contextual Design

October 24, 2013

BCWH is excited to announce that our project for the University of Richmond E. Claiborne Robins Stadium has won a Merit Award from the Virginia Society American Institute of Architects for Contextual Design excellence. Our design effort was in collaboration with McMillan Pazdan Smith Architects, of Greenville, South Carolina.

The University had two main goals established for this project: create a high-quality venue for on-campus outdoor events, and create a facility with an appropriate scale for this project type in relation to the campus architecture. Achieving a high-quality game-day experience comes in the form of easy access to the site; the latest technology in lighting, sound, and video; and support spaces that offer a variety of food and spaces to gather. The structural language employed by large group seating and circulation was clothed in the Collegiate Gothic exterior that is celebrated across the campus. Given the typical scale of this project type, there was concern about the proportion and height of the constructions overpowering the scale of the campus context and adjacent academic and residential buildings. By distributing the seating, as well as wrapping the architectural elements with masonry enclosures accented with contrasting cast stone banding, the size of the buildings is visually minimized and creates an intimate physical environment that reflects the University’s Collegiate Gothic style.
