Collegiate School Bottle Cap Murals

May 13, 2014

Bo Fairlamb recently volunteered to help students at Collegiate Lower School with a special art project featuring visiting artist Michelle Stitzlein and recycled bottle caps.

The students used all sorts of collected bottle caps to create five 4ft x 6ft murals to display in the cafeteria and various hallways throughout the school.

Holly Smith and Dana DuMont, of the Visual Arts Department at Collegiate, remarked:

“This was truly a multi-layered project, with contributions that started by collecting and sorting what really feels like millions of caps, to drawing and painting the backgrounds (thank you morning art 4th graders), to making connections with a 1st grade recycling speaker and music room compositions, to assembling and drilling and oohing and ahhing as we enjoy the finished artworks for years to come. Our hope is that the conversation will continue–about how unconventional and discarded items can become art materials and ultimately works of art, when viewed with a resourceful mind and a creative spirit.”

Bravo to the Collegiate School team and all of the young artists!
