2014: Year in Review

As we reflect on this past year, we here at BCWH have a lot to celebrate. We started the year with the opening of the newly renovated Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School with the City of Richmond. In April, our newest elementary school, Kaechele ES in Henrico County received LEED Silver Certification for the incorporation of sustainable design and in May our landscape design at Hollywood Cemetery received the Cultural Landscape Preservation Award. With June came the ground breaking of the new Institute of Contemporary Art on the VCU campus. This project not only allows us to continue our work with VCU, but also gives us the opportunity to work with the great Steven Holl. By July we were awarded our first LEED GOLD certification for our design on the VCU Academic Learning Commons.

With the start of the new school year, Richmond Montessori opened its doors to their newest addition, the Upper Elementary and Science Building. In association with McMillan Pazden Smith, we completed two of our first higher education housing projects, The University of Richmond’s Gateway Village and Randolph Macon College’s Birdsong Hall. Additions and renovations were completed in time for the start of school at Midlothian High School and construction of the 197,000 sq.ft. multi-purpose facility housing a Student Career and Technical Center, a Conference Center, and the Chesterfield County Public Schools Administration offices was completed in August as the new Chesterfield Career and Technical Center at Hull. And finally, renovations were completed at both Roanoke College’s, Fintel Library and VCU’s daVinci Center for Innovation.

In 2014, we also began construction on our two new libraries in Henrico County. Libbie Mill is scheduled to open November of 2015 and the Varina Area Library in the summer of 2016. In coordination with McMillan Pazden Smith, we began design phases on the renovation and expansion of Zable Stadium at the College of William & Mary. We have several other exciting projects currently underway, so stayed tuned to see what 2015 has in store.

Thank you to our great clients for another successful year and we wish everyone a Happy New Year!
